Google+ is a social media platform.
Yes, it has a lot of the same features that platforms like Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram offer, but there’s one big difference.
Because Google+ is part of Google’s search engine machine, the one key difference between Google + and all the other social media platforms is a question of intention.
People tend to go to Facebook, for instance, for things to be brought TO them. Entertainment, education, dumb hilarious distractions. That sort of stuff.
But people go to Google—and by extension, Google+—to FIND SOMETHING SPECIFIC.
And because of that difference, here’s why a Google + page needs to be part of your overall brand building and marketing strategy.
1. Google Search Visibility
If you post something on Facebook, it’s not going to just STAY on Facebook. You’ll still be able to search for it on Google and it’ll come up in the results. But it might take awhile.
With Google+ though, anything you post—a video, blog post, pictures, whatever—it gets indexed IMMEDIATELY. So if you want to show up on the first page of Google search results, putting it on Google+ is the quickest way to accomplish that.
2. Excellent Targeting Options
You know how your old best friend’s aunt’s posts keep showing up in your Facebook feed? Annoying, right? You could unfriend or hide her posts, but you don’t want make her completely invisible. (After all, those cat sweaters she’s always wearing are sometimes enough to brighten your day.)
Plus, if you post something, it’s going to be a crap shoot as to which 13% of your followers see it.
So, it’s a pretty either-or sort of dilemma.
With Google+, though, you can set up what they call “circles.” This allows you to categorize your followers. So you can send out your latest recipe to one circle, and a blog post about the state of the integrative health industry to another.
This means that the people who are going to see what you post are EXACTLY the ones you want to see it.
3. Knowledge Graph
If you’re a local integrative health practice—by which i mean, your practice physically interacts with people out there in the real world—Google+ is necessary.
The reason for this is because Google+ Publisher will create what’s called a “knowledge graph.” This is that box that appears on the right side of the search results when someone googles either you specifically, or the keywords that match what you’ve set up within Google+.
This box includes location, hours, phone number, and a number of other pieces of necessary information—along with a photo of your business.
Not only does this make your practice far more visible, it also serves as a huge boost for your credibility.
People are far more likely to come to you if they know you’re legit, and that you’re dedicated to healing people just like them!
